Mavericks, Bulldogs Set to Square Off in Nonconference Tilt

What's Lies Ahead: The Minnesota State softball team travels to Rosemount, Minn., Wednesday, to face Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Minnesota Duluth in a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m., in the Irish Sports Dome.

About the Bulldogs:
Minnesota Duluth enters the weekend with a 3-3 record. Last weekend, the Bulldogs traveled to Denver, Colo., and played three doubleheaders against RMAC schools. Sophomore utility player Kierra Jeffers leads the team at the plate with a .550 average while senior Mandy Matula is 2-0 on the mound with a 1.00 earned run average. UMD is coached by Jen Banford 138-114 in her six-plus years in Duluth.

Up Until Now: Minnesota State enters the doubleheader with a 6-1 record and are coming off a weekend where it played to a 4-1 record at the NSIC/RMAC Crossover Challenge. The Mavericks dropped a 9-2 decision to open the event to UC-Colorado Springs. On day two of the event, MSU regrouped to sweep three games, defeating Nebraska-Kearney, 8-0 (5), Adams State, 8-0 (5), and CSU-Pueblo (2-1). Sunday, the Mavericks earned a 9-6 victory over #24 Mesa State.

Lead Me: Junior centerfielder Chelsea Erickson leads the Mavericks in several offensive categories. Erickson enters this week's play leading the team in batting average (.571), slugging percentage (.905), on base percentage (.625), runs scored (9), hits (12), total bases (19) and home runs (2). She is also tied for the team lead in RBI (9) and doubles 3).

On the mound, sophomore Courtney McKelvogue leads MSU in earned run average (1.11), opposing batting average (.149), record (3-0) and batters struck out (4).

What Lies Ahead:
Minnesota State returns to action March 5 when it opens its annual spring trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Over the course of seven days, the Mavericks will play 14 games, opening with Northwoods University on March 5.
