Mavericks Travel to Sunshine State For Tournament

What's Up?: The Minnesota State men's basketball team travels to Lakeland, Fla., this weekend to participate in the Terrace Hotel/Ledger Media Group Tournament hosted by Florida Southern College this weekend.  Minnesota State opens the event Friday against Armstrong Atlantic State at 5:15 p.m. (EST).  Saturday, Minnesota State will play either Limestone or Florida Southern.  Gametime for Saturday's game will depend on Friday's outcome.

Minnesota State History: The 2011-12 season marks the 90th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men’s basketball. The Mavericks are 1,181-823 (.589) in 2,004 games since the program’s inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 50-12  record (.806) to go with a pair of regular-season championships.

The Mavericks have also made seven previous appearances in the NCAA Tournament, going 12-9 (.571) in those trips.

A Little Bit About Armstrong Atlantic: Armstrong Atlantic enters the week owners of a 1-0 record as it downed Wingate, 82-74 last week.  Prior to Friday's tilt against the Mavericks, the Pirates entertain Costal Georgia.  

Armstrong was picked tenth in the Peach Belt Athletic Conference preseason poll and is coached by Jeremy Luther who is in his third season with the program and owns a 27-28 record with the program and a 60-52 overall record as a head coach.

In the Pirates win over Wingate, senior guard Mychal Horn led the team with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting.  All five starters scored in double-digits in the win as Armstrong shot 49 percent from the floor and forced 16 Wingate turnovers.

A Little Bit About Limestone:  Limestone enters the weekend owners of a 2-2 record and has won its last two games, most recently a 70-66 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Saints are preseason favorites in the Conference Carolinas and are coming off a 2010-11 campaign which saw it win 23 games against just seven losses, including the school's first-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Senior forward Jarell Douglass leads the Saints in scoring averaging 21.3 points per game and nine rebounds while junior wing Joe Raga is averaging 6.3 points per contest and ten rebounds a game.  As a team, Limestone is averaging 62.5 points per game while giving up 64.8 and is shooting 43.1 percent.

The Saints are coached by Brandon Scott who is in his fifth season and owns a 65-53 record.

A Little Bit About Florida Southern: Florida Southern enters the week owners of a 1-1 record and prior to this weekend's event it hosts Puerto Rico-Bayamon Tuesday evening.

The Mocs opened the season with a 73-43 loss to South Florida before rebounding to defeat Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras this past Saturday, 97-79.  

A trio of FSC starters reached double-digits, led by junior  guard Seth Evans who scored 25 points and passed out a game-high eight assists.  Sophomore guard Dominic Lane added a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds while freshman  guard Kevin Capers scored  14.  Sophomore forward Kyle Tazioli came off the bench and scored 15 while adding seven rebounds.

The Mocs were picked to finish third in the Sunshine State Conference and are coached by Linc Darner who is 110-51 with the program.

All-Time:  Minnesota State is 0-2 all-time against Florida Southern...The Mavericks have never played Armstrong Atlantic or Limestone.
