MSU Falls to UND in a 5-3 Decision Friday

Grand Forks, N.D.— The Minnesota State women’s hockey team dropped game one of the two-game weekend series to the University of North Dakota 5-3 Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.
 
University of North Dakota’s Monique Weber scored early in the first period at 3:05 as she shelved MSU goalkeeper Alli Altmann in the upper right corner. Allison Parizek and Candace Molle assisted the Weber goal.
 
Maverick junior center Lauren Smith responded at the 7:08 mark in the first as she broke down the boards and drove to the net and did a 360 degree spin to beat UND’s Stephanie Ney. Smith’s goal was her second of the year as sophomore Nicole Germaine earned her fourth assist of the season on the goal.
 
University of North Dakota forward Jocelyn Lamoureux caught the Mavericks during a line change as she faked a slapshot and beat the MSU defender to slid the puck past Altmann to put UND up 2-1 at 15:17 of the first period.
 
MSU came out fresh to start the second period outshooting UND 3-0 in the first four minutes. The national leading in scoring, Jocelyn Lamoureux, struck again late in the second period at 17:17 to put UND up 3-1. Monique Lamoureux-Kolls and Michelle Karvinen assisted Jocelyn Lamoureux’s second goal of the game. MSU’s Altmann made 14 saves in the second period.
 
UND’s top line scored added a power-play goal at the 5:21 mark of the third period when Monique Lamoureux-Kolls rifled a wrist shot from the point. Karvinen and Jocelyn Lamoureux tallied the assists.
 
MSU connected on its first power-play chance of the night on a five-on-three opportunity at 9:09 of the third as senior defenseman Jackie Otto blasted the puck top shelf, blocker side to put the Mavericks within two goals. The Otto goal was assisted by junior Emilia Andersson and senior Emmi Leinonen.
 
Moments later, MSU turned the puck over in the neutral zone as Allison Parizek scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway, putting UND up 5-2.
 
In a last minute effort, MSU’s Smith notched her second goal of the night and final goal of the game at 18:36 when she cut across the top of the circle and beat the Ney stick side on the ice.
 
Minnesota State finished 1-of-2 on the power-play, while the University of North Dakota finished 1-of-4.
 
Maverick goalkeeper Altmann finished the night with 29 saves in the loss, while Ney turned away 23 Maverick shots.
 
The teams with meet against tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m., at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
