Box Score CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Minnesota State came away from the California (Pa.) Tip-Off Tournament 2-0 as it defeated California (Pa.) University 57-45 Sunday afternoon.
Despite not making its first basket until four minutes into the game, MSU made a quick comeback after trailing 7-3 through the games first six minutes. The Mavericks used a 12-8 run to tie the game at 15 before shutting down Cal-U for the final eight minutes of the first half. MSU would score 10 points during this stretch as it went into halftime with the 25-15 lead.
Although the Mavericks held a ten-point lead at half, they shot just 28.1 percent from the floor including 0-for-8 from behind the three-point line.
MSU would hold onto its lead for the entire second half as it outscored Cal-U, 32-30. The Mavericks were sparked by a strong second-half performance by junior forward and eventual tournament MVP
Ali Wilkinson who posted 10 points and nine rebounds in the second half.
The Mavericks were led offensively by junior guard
Jameila Hudnell who finished with 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Wilkinson finished with her second consecutive double-double scoring 13 points while pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures for MSU was freshman forward
Jamie Bresnahan who added 10 points while senior forward
Laura Weber was the only other Maverick to finish with double-digit rebounds as she grabbed 12 including eight offensive boards.
The Mavericks finished the game shooting 31.7 percent from the floor compared to just 27.3 percent by Cal-U. MSU outrebounded Cal-U 59-37 while the Vulcans committed five less turnovers (20-15).
The Mavericks (2-0) return to action Monday, Nov. 21 as they host their first home game of the 2011-12 season against Waldorf College. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., at the Taylor Center.
