Mankato, Minn.. --- Minnesota State scored first, but could not hold off Ohio State in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night in Mankato with the visiting Buckeyes claiming a 2-1 win.
The teams traded first period power play goals with with Minnesota State sophomore Lauren Zrust putting a nice feed from Lauren Smith past OSU netminder Lisa Steffes at 4:40 and Buckeye defenseman Kelly Wild scoring on a shot from the point at 17:54.
OSU’s Ally Tarr broke the tie when she scored at 8:33 of the second period on a breakaway attempt when she wristed a shot that beat MSU senior netminder Alli Altmann
Tarr’s goal proved to be the game-winner with the two teams battling through a scoreless third period to end the game.
OSU, which converted on of one-of-two power play chances, owned a 30-22 advantage in shots on goal in the game. The Mavericks went one-for-two with the man advantage.
Now 4-5-0, 0-3-0 WCHA on the year, the Mavericks conclude the two-game WCHA series with the Buckeyes (4-2-1, 4-2-1 WCHA) with a 3:07 p.m. face-off scheduled Saturday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato.
