Box Score MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 20 Minnesota State Mavericks responded positively following the previous night's defeat to top-ranked Concordia as they put together a sweep of their own against the visiting St. Cloud State Huskies Saturday afternoon in Taylor Center.
MSU started strong in the first set as it jumped out to an early 10-2 lead forcing St. Cloud State to call a timeout. Junior outside hitter #Chelsea Fogarty#, sophomore defensive specialist #Briel Hendricksen# and senior defensive specialist #Alli Rice# all recorded aces in the first set as the Mavericks went on to win, 25-18.
The Mavericks kept their momentum going in the second set as they jumped out to another early lead. MSU busted out to a 10-4 lead before going on a 15-7 run to close out the set, 25-11.
The third set would start well for MSU once again as it broke out to an early 12-6 lead. Although the third set was played more competitively, MSU came out on top, 25-16, en route to earning the sweep over the Huskies.
The Mavericks were led offensively by junior middle blocker #Jill Storlie# who was unstoppable at the net, killing 17 of her 18 opportunities for a .944 hitting percentage. Joining Storlie with double-digit blocks was junior middle blocker #Courteney Steinhauser# who recorded 11 on 22 attempts (.500). Senior setter Brittany Stamer paced the Mavericks with 43 assists while Rice added five service aces.
The Mavericks (12-7, 5-6 NSIC) will next be in action Tuesday, Oct. 18 as the squad is set to face No. 10 Wayne State. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., at Taylor Center.
