Minnesota State Delivers Victory to Bring in the New Year

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State opened the second half of the season in victorious fashion beating MSU Moorhead 71-57. The game was rescheduled from New Year’s Day due from the anticipation of the bad weather.

Four MSU players finished in double-digit points as senior Andrea Walsh scored a career-high 17 points and sophomore Ali Wilkinson dominated the boards with 13 rebounds and 11 points, earning her fifth double-double this season.

In a back-and-fourth type of first half, the Mavericks pulled ahead by nine points 2:40 left in the half, as Walsh hammered down nine at the halfway point in the contest.

Unable to score in the last 2:40 Minnesota State went into halftime with a 35-30 lead, while shooting 45 percent in the half.

The second half was all Mavericks, Five minutes into the second half the Mavericks went on a 6-0 run that helped MSU hold a double-digit lead the rest of the night.

Wilkinson finished the day with 11 points and a sensational 13 rebounds, with 12 being defensive boards. Jennie Noreen shot 5-of-7 from the field ending with 12 points. Sophomore Stephanie Haight came off the bench scoring 11 points for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State shot 27-of-58 from the field at the end of regulation, including 48 percent in the second half.

MSU was solid from the line as they shot 75 percent, opposed to the Dragons 63 percent.

MSU held Minnesota State Moorhead to score only 14 points in last 10 minutes which gave the MSU its third Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory.

Minnesota State (6-5, 3-4 NSIC) will continue action at the Taylor Center tomorrow against Minnesota, Crookston at 6 p.m.
