Box Score Mankato, Minn.— The Minnesota State women’s basketball team picked up its eighth Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory Saturday afternoon by virtue of a a 68-48 victory over Upper Iowa.
Minnesota State sophomore forward Ali Wilkinson shook off a Friday night performance which saw he score just four points and answered with a 20-point, 17-rebound effort en route to recording her tenth double-double of the season. The 17 rebounds also established a new career-high for Wilkinson.
The Mavericks started the game going 5-of-5 from the three point line over the first seven minutes, building a 21-12 lead. Senior guard Andrea Walsh connected on three of the threes to start the spurt. Walsh, who scored a career-high 21 points yesterday finished with 19 points this afternoon, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and contributing six assists and four steals.
The Peacocks use a 7-2 run, to cut the score to 28-21 as Jeri Jacobson would have ten points with 14:35 remaining in the half.
MSU shot a solid 54 percent in the first half and a total of 48 percent in the afternoon. UIU shot 32 percent from the floor in the first half and the game.
After 20 minutes of play, Minnesota State held a 36-25 lead and was shooting 54 percent from downtown. The Peacocks owned the glass 24-14 over MSU in the half.
The Mavericks capitalized on Upper Iowa turnovers as they scored 15 points off turnovers in the half, with the Peacocks scoring eight points on Mavericks turnovers.
UIU cut the double-digit lead to nine with 12:32 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer from senior Chelsea Arndt.
Minnesota State would fail to make a basket in over five minutes to start the second half until Wilkinson knocked down two short jumpers away to put MSU back up 53-44. The Mavericks didn’t let up as they would go on an 11-0 run to secure the 68-48 win.
MSU had 30 points in the paint, 22 points off turnovers and ten points off the fast break.
Minnesota State (11-8, 8-7 NSIC) will hit the road next weekend to take on Augustana on Friday at 6 p.m.
