Big Rapids, Mich. --- The Mavericks finished their opening weekend 4-0 with two more non-conference victories Saturday. The first was a 3-1 win over host team Ferris State and the second, a 3-0 win over Michigan Tech.
In MSU’s first contest, the Mavericks were defeated 25-23 in the first set, but much like yesterday, took the next three for the win. Senior outside hitter Amanda Beekman tallied a team-best 11 kills, junior setter Brittany Stamer earned 26 assists and junior defensive specialist Alli Rice lead the Mavericks with 14 digs.
In game two of the day, Minnesota State swept Michigan Tech by scores of 25-12, 25-13, 26-16. Sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty led MSU with 11 kills, while Beekman killed eight. Stamer again led the Mavericks in assists with 34. Sophomore defensive specialist Samantha Dale tallied a team-best 13 kills, Rice earned 11.
“Overall it was a good weekend, said head coach Dennis Amundson. “We played some good competition and got to find out how our players would respond. We have a lot of work to do, but the team appears willing to do the work.”
Minnesota State will continue non-conference play next weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for the Nova Southeastern Tournament. The Mavericks will face Christian Brothers and West Alabama on Friday, District of Columbia and Lynn on Saturday.
