Big Rapids, Mich. --- The Minnesota State volleyball squad recorded two wins to start the 2010 season. The first a 3-1 win over #20 Hillsdale and the other a 3-0 win over Lock Haven.
The Mavericks dropped their opening set to Hillsdale, 26-24, but rolled through the next three to get the win, and swept Lock Haven by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-7.
In game one, senior middle blocker Kimber Kuhl finished with a team-best 17 kills, while senior outside hitter Amanda Beekman tallied 15. Setting up her teammates was junior setter Brittany Stamer who recorded 44 assists.
In the 3-0 sweep over Lock Haven, senior middle blocker Amanda Thompson tallied a team-high 13 blocks. Stamer earned 41 assists to lead the Mavericks.
“It was nice to finally play against someone else, work out our kinks and find out what kind of team we are,” said head coach Dennis Amundson.
The Mavericks will continue play in the Ferris State Invitational tomorrow. MSU is scheduled to face the host team, Ferris state at 12:00 p.m. and Michigan Tech at 3:00 p.m.
