Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State volleyball team, ranked 12th in the nation, earned a 3-1 win over the Bemidji State Beavers Friday night. The Mavericks took the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-20, but dropped the third 13-25. MSU then finished the Beavers in the fourth, taking the set 25-18.
Senior hitters Amanda Beekman and Kimber Kuhl each recorded 11 kills to lead the Mavericks offense, while sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Fogarty tallied 10. Sophomore middle blocker Courtney Steinhauser added eight kills and garnered a team-best .533 hitting percentage. Junior setter Brittany Stamer added a team-high 43 assists to season totals.
Beekman and senior middle blocker Amanda Thompson each tallied three blocks, protecting the net for MSU, while defensive specialists Alli Rice and Samantha Dale each recorded 15 digs.
“Give Bemidji State credit, they played us hard,” said head coach Dennis Amundson. “But our kids hung in there and found a way to slow down their middle.”
The Mavericks (10-2 overall, 2-2 NSIC) will wrap-up the week with a NSIC contest against the second –rated Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs tomorrow night at 4:00 p.m.
