#12 Maverick Volleyballers to Host Concordia in Home Opener

NSIC Action:  The Maverick volleyballers, ranked #12 in the nation, will play their first home game of the season Tuesday night when they play host to the sixth-rated Concordia University Golden Bears. MSU then finishes the week on the road, traveling to Bemidji, Minn. to face the Beavers on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Duluth, Minn. to face the second-ranked Bulldogs Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

Concordia University:
The Concordia University Golden Bears, rated-sixth in the nation, sit 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC...CU downed Northern State and Mary to open league play...The Golden Bears are led by senior Emily Palkert and sophomore Cassie Haag who own 131 and 127 kills, respectively...Freshman Amanda Konetchy leads CU in assists with 435 and Taylor Fieldsted leads the Golden Bears in digs with 142...The Mavericks are 2-9 all-time against the Golden Bears... The two victories MSU has against Concordia University came in the two teams first and second meetings.

Bemidji State:
The Bemidji State Beavers enter the week with a 8-3 record, 2-1 in the NSIC...BSU opened league play with wins over Mary and Minnesota, Crookston and a loss to Minnesota State- Moorhead... The Beavers are led by seniors Lindsey Weyer and Nicole Olson who own 117 and 115 kills, respectively...Junior setter Jessi-Beth McCannell leads the Beavers with 427 assists with and Olson has tallied a team-best 41 blocks for Bemidji State... The Mavericks are 26-17 all-time against the Beavers, 19 straight wins for MSU...Last season the two teams met for a conference tilt in which Minnesota State won, 3-0.

Minnesota Duluth: The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs enter the week with a 11-0 record, 3-0 in the NSIC...UMD opened league play with wins over Northern State, Minnesota, Crookston and Minnesota State- Moorhead...The Bulldogs are led by junior April Hansen, senior Alyssa Nelson and senior Katie Kuffel who own 113, 103 and 102 kills, respectively...Junior setter Eleena Iisakka leads the Bulldogs in assists with 438 and Allison Fanta has tallied a team-best 153 digs for Minnesota Duluth...The Mavericks are 18-37-2 all-time against the Bulldogs, 19...Last season MSU won the one contest between the two teams, 3-1.

Climbing the Charts: Last year outside hitter Amanda Beekman (Marshall, Minn.) finished second on the team in kills with 394 and became the eighth member of the Maverick 1,000 Kill Club. The outside hitter currently owns 112 kills on the season and 1,184 during her career, which ranks sixth all-time on the Minnesota State kills list.

Miss 3,000: After her second season with the Mavericks, setter Brittany Stamer had earned 2,244 assists, just 756 short of the 3,000 Assist Club. This season Stamer has already racked up 354, putting her at 2,598 for her career, only 402 away from the 3,000 mark.

Nonconference Sweep: The 14th ranked Minnesota State volleyball squad finished its nonconference portion of the season undefeated, 8-0. After finishing 4-0 in the Ferris State Volleyball Invitational two weeks ago, the Mavericks continued to roll this past weekend in the Nova Southeastern Tournament with wins over Christian Brothers, 3-0, West Alabama, 3-1, District of Columbia, 3-0, and Lynn, 3-0.

Win #100!: Head coach Dennis Amundson was the owner of 98 career wins at Minnesota State heading MSU’s final nonconference weekend, and with a 4-0 perfromance from his squad, the sixth year head coach reached the century mark...Only three other coaches in program history have reached the 100 win mark...Georgene Brock, Marge Burkett and Doug Tully are the others...Amundson currently owns the second best winning percentage in program history with .644, and the best winning percecntage of any head coach with 100 or more wins.
