Lori Meyer Earns 800th Career Victory

Mankato, Minn.— The Minnesota State softball team swept the Warriors of Waldorf College for the first home series at the Diamond at Gage Towers Thursday, 10-1, 13-0.

Head coach Lori Meyer – who is the winningest active collegiate coach (all divisions) in the state of Minnesota – earned her 800th career victory in the second game of the day.  During her tenure at Minnesota State, which covers more than a quarter of a century, Meyer has compiled a 800-536-3 (.579) record at Minnesota State and has coached 86.4 percent of MSU’s 925 victories in program history.   


In the first game the Mavericks opened the bottom of the third with a single off the bat of senior Libbie ReichlingReichling moved up a base on an error by the leftfielder and then took third on a wildpitch.


With Reichling on first, redshirt freshman designated player Liz Doppenberg drew a walk. Sophomore rightfielder Amanda Umhoefer laced a single to right field, platting Reichling and the game’s first run.


Senior second baseman Abby Morris walked to load the bases before freshman center fielder singled to right, plating Doppenberg and Umhoeffer.


Abby Morris would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third baseman Julie O'Neal. Lauren Morris scored on the ensuing at bat as junior catcher Kelsey Thompson ripped a double to leftcenter. Thompson later scored on an error off the bat of sophomore Chelsea Erickson giving the Mavericks their sixth and final run of the inning.

The Mavericks scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Abby Morris, her second blast of the season.

 

Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl went the distance to earn the win in the opening win, allowing one run – unearned – on four hits while striking out four en route to her sixth win of the season

 

Starting off the second game the Mavericks opened the bottom of the first inning scoring seven runs on four hits on two Warrior errors to set the pace of the game.

 

In the bottom of the second Minnesota State earned two more runs, one from a single through right side by junior Keri O'Keefe bringing in freshman Chloe Minkel, the second, came by a single through left side from freshman Chelsie Krull, bringing Erickson home. The Mavericks had three hits with no Warrior errors to close out the second.

 

Minnesota State added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth off six hits and no errors to finish the game.

 

Freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue finished the day off with a shut out victory with no hits while striking out four en route to her sixth win of the season against two losses.

 

Minnesota State (12-4) returns to the Diamond at Gage Towers Wednesday for a nonconference doubleheader against Winona State, first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
