St. Louis, Mo. --- Minnesota State went 2-3 in the first day of competition at the Shrewsbury Invitational, moving its record to 31-24 on the season.
The Mavericks ended the day in a tie for fifth place, with Nebraska and Central Missouri tied for the top spot with 4-1 records. All five of the matches on the day were Baker Format (Five-Game Total Pinfall).
MSU opened the day with a 955-826 loss to #11 Valparaiso. Then, the Mavericks split a pair of matches against the two squads that are tied for #14 in the nation, first falling to Wisconsin-Whitewater 881-828 before rebounding to down Louisiana Tech 874-785. In the win over the Lady Techsters, senior Ashley Clinchoc filled in all 10 frames she threw, including notching six strikes in the match.
Fifth-ranked Central Missouri defeated MSU 902-852 in the fourth match of the day. In the evening's finale, the Mavericks rallied to defeat Elmhurst 794-781. Minnesota State trailed by 16 pins after the first game of the set, but by the end of the fourth game had brought the score back to even. Then, MSU eeked out a 142-129 advantage in the final game of the night to earn the victory in the match.
The Mavericks resume competition in the Shrewsbury Invitational Saturday with another five matches on the docket.
