Minnesota State Drops Away Contest to St. Cloud State, 6-1

St. Cloud, Minn. --- The Mavericks traveled to St. Cloud, Minn. to kick-off their home-and-home series with St. Cloud State Huskies Friday afternoon at the National Hockey Center. Minnesota State was defeated 6-1.

The Huskies didn’t wait long to score the opening goal. Just 25 seconds into the game the senior forward Felicia Nelson tallied the game’s first goal. The goal was assisted by rookie forward Alex Nelson and freshman defender Lisa Martinson.

Minnesota State knotted up the contest at the 8:55 in the first period on a goal from senior forward Ashley Young. Young scored on Huskie goaltender Ashley Nixon’s glove-side and was setup nicely in from of the net by rookie forward Lauren Smith. Senior forward and Captain Kala Buganski also earned an assist on the goal.

St. Cloud jumped back in the lead with an even strength goal midway through the first period. Senior forward Holly Roberts tallied the go-ahead goal at the 12:50 mark and was assisted by fellow senior Felicia Nelson.

The Huskies increased their lead to 5-1 after a couple early second period power play goals and an even strength score late in the period. The first coming at the 1:04 mark scored by senior forward Caitlin Hogan and the other 5:34 into the period from Holly Roberts. Senior defenseman Kelly Meirhofer tallied the late score for the Huskies.

The Huskies outshot the Mavericks 32-28 in the game. MSU finished the game 0-2 with an extra skater while the Huskies finished 2-5.

Sophomore Alli Altmann tallied 18 saves in the contest, while junior Paige Thunder finished with 10 saves.

 Young continues to lead the Mavericks in scoring this season with 18 points (8-10--18) with Smith sitting second on the team in points with 16 (6-10—16).

The Mavericks (4-18-5, 2-16-5-3 WCHA) will wrap up their home-and-home series with the Huskies Sunday afternoon at 12:07 p.m. at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn.
