Second Half Push Corrals Mustangs

    Marshall, Minn.The Minnesota State Mavericks traveled to Marshall Minn., where they dominated the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State Saturday evening, 70-54.  

 

The win marks the third victory on the road this season and 577 win in program history.

 

The Mavericks opened the game as sophomore center Laura Weber won the tip-off but allowed the Mustangs to take the first two points off a jumper. Senior forward Liz Trauger put down the Mavericks first points off a jumper followed by a shot from the arc by sophomore guard Lauren Barber. After battling back-and-forth the score remained tied at 20 at the ten-minute mark of the first half. Senior guard Tiffany Moe broke the tie a minute later with a traditional three-point play, before stopping the Mustang offense and adding seven unanswered points, taking a nine-point lead with six minutes left in the half. MSU would take a ten point lead on the Mustangs at half, 41-31. This marks the third out of last ten games the Mavericks had 40 plus points at half.

 

Trauger led the Mavericks in scoring with 14 points in the first half followed by Weber with 10 and Moe with seven. The Mavericks shot 60 percent from the field and 3-3 at the line. MSU outrebounded the Mustangs 17-8, as Weber led with six boards. The score was tied six times in the half while there were seven lead changes.

 

Weber opened the second half with a quick jumper but would be repeated by the Mustangs. The Mustangs would step-up the pressure and go on a 10-4 run to cut the Maverick lead to five points at 13:31. MSU would battle back going on a 18-2 run as Barber and freshman guard Sarah Wiens both drained shots from the arc and a jumper from Moe would put the Mavericks up by 21 with 6:40 left to play. The Mavericks would continue to control the game and finish with a 16-point lead, 70-54.

 

Leading the Mavericks was Trauger with 18 points, Weber with 14 and both Moe and Barber posting nine points. The Mavericks shot 50.9 percent from the field, 30.0 percent from the arc and went 6-8 at the line. Weber earned her third career double-double as she posted 14 points bringing down 10 rebounds. MSU won the battle of the boards 34-28.

 

Minnesota State now 14-11 overall and 9-9 in the NSIC will play host to Augustana Wed. in the Taylor Center at 6 p.m.
