Minnesota State to End Regular Season Campaign Playing Host to UND

MANKATO, Minn.--- The Mavericks, now 6-19-5 on the year and 4-17-5-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, will play host to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux this weekend. Friday’s contest will start at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday’s at 3:07 p.m. with both games being played at All Seasons Arena.

Program History: The 2009-10 season marks the 12th year of women’s hockey as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. The Mavericks currently hold a 119-249-37 (.340) all-time record.

Follow the Leader: Senior forward Kala Buganski is the Captain and senior forward Ashley Young is the Alternate Captain for the 2009-10 season.

A Look at the Sioux: The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux sit eighth in the WCHA, two points behind MSU, with a 7-19-4 overall record and 6-18-2-0 in the WCHA. The Fight Sioux are lead by sophomore forward  Alyssa Wiebe (9-19--28), which ranks fifteenth in the WCHA against all opponents. Sophomore forward Sara Dagenais sits second on the team in scoring with (8-9--17) and third in points is rookie forward Mary Loken with (7-9--16).

MSU/UND History: Minnesota State is 18-5-5 all-time against the Fighting Sioux. Earlier this season the Mavericks traveled to Grand Forks, N.D. and left 1-0-1-1. The Mavericks defeated the Sioux in the series opener by a score of 4-2. The two teams wrapped up the series with a 1-1 tie, MSU won the shootout. In Friday’s win, sophomore forward Emmi Leinonen scored two goals and earned one assist in the win, while junior forward Nina Tikkinen tallied two assists. Sophomore forward Moira O’Connor eanred a goal and an assist and senior forward Christina Lee (1G), senior defenseman Holly Snyder (1A) and junior forward Lisa Edman (1G) each earned one point. In Saturday’s tie, Leinonen tallied the Mavericks lone goal, assisted by Tikkinen and Lee. The shootout goal that earned the Mavericks the extra WCHA point was scored by Leinonen.

Wisconsin Notes: The Minnesota State Mavericks split their road series with the University of Wisconsin Badgers this past weekend, with a 5-3 win on Friday and a 6-0 loss on Sunday...The win marks the first win in program history against Wisconsin...sixth of the season...fourth conference win of the year...Win number 119 in program history...65th WCHA win in program history...Senior forward Kala Buganski finished the weekend with three points, two goals and one assist and all of them coming in the Mavericks win on Friday...Three Mavericks finished the weekend with two points including sophomore blueliner Jenna Peterson (0-2--2), rookie forward Lauren Smith (0-2--2) and rookie forward Lauren Zrust (2-0--2)...Senior forward Ashley Young (1A), senior blueliner Holly Snyder (1A),  sophomore Moira O’Connor (1G) and sophomore defender Jackie Otto (1A) all finished the series with one point.
