MSU Looks to Bounce Back on the Road This Weekend

What’s Up This Weekend: After playing five of six games at home this season, MSU hits the road this weekend as it continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play and takes on Concordia and St. Cloud. The Mavericks square off with the Golden Bears on friday at 5:30 p.m., then travel to St. Cloud  to play the Huskies Saturday at 4 p.m.

MSU/ Concordia:
Concordia leads the series 10-9 in the 19 meetings. The  two teams played three times last year, including once in the NSIC tournament as Concordia was fortunate enough to win twice. In the last ten meetings, Concordia has won six games. The longest streak in the series went eight games from 2000-2008 belonging to Concordia.
 
Scouting the Golden Bears:
Concordia comes into Friday with a 1-5 record on the season.  CU holds a 0-2 record in the NSIC, losing to Northern State 55-67 and U-Mary 88-91. The Golden Bears average 69.2 points per game, while giving up 74.5 points per game. Concordia is shooting 38 percent from the field and 76 percent on free throws this season. Senior guard Maurika Hickman averages 15 points per game for CU and averages 5.5 free throws made a game. Freshman Erica Gress averages 5.3 rebounds and 10.2 points per game this year. The Golden Bears are coached by Paul Fessler, who has been at the helm since 2000. Fessler has won 20 games every season except the  2000-01 season.

MSU/ SCSU History:  The two rival schools have faced each other 85 times, with St. Cloud State winning 51 of them. Last season the Mavericks played two tough matches but fell short 62-63 and 67-69 against the Huskies. In the last 10 meetings, MSU is 4-6 against SCSU. Minnesota State’s longest winning streaks against St. Cloud State came  from 1968-75 and 1991-95, both streaks winning nine games in a row. The Huskies on the other hand, owned MSU from 1999-2007 by winning 20 games in a row.

About the Huskies:
The Huskies hold a 4-2 record this season. St. Cloud State is 1-1 in the NSIC, beating U-Mary 73-71 and losing to Northern State 60-71. The Huskies average 72 points per game and give up 63.8 points per game. St. Cloud State is shooting 41 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the line. SCSU has four players who average more than ten points a game, including senior Talisha Barlow who averages 12.2 points per game. Leading the freshmen class is Jessica Benson averagin seven boards per game and 10.8 points per game. Freshmen Sam Price averages 10.3 points per game, together Price and Benson are second and third on the team in scoring.
The Huskies are coached former Minnesota State coach. Lori Fish. While at MSU, Fish held a 62-53 record at MSU and currently holds a 36-28 record at SCSU coming into the weekend.

One Big Family:
SCSU Head Coach Lori Fish spent four years at MSU before taking the St. Cloud State job three years ago. While at MSU, Fish held a 62-53 record. St. Cloud State assistant coach Megan Vogel was a former volunteer Minnesota State coach last season. SCSU Graduate assistant coach Alanna Wahl played for the Mavericks from 03-07 when Fish was the coach. Minnesota State head coach Pam Gohl was an assistant coach for fish for two years before taking the throne at Minnesota State.
