Box Score Madison, Wis. – The Minnesota State Maverick women's hockey squad dropped a 3-2 league-contest to #1 Wisconsin Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks dug themselves into a hole early in the contest as the Badgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Sisters, junior Brooke Ammerman and freshman Brittany Ammerman netted the two first period goals. Brook’s goal came at the 10:24 mark and was scored with an extra attacker, while Brittany’s was even strength and assisted by Brooke.
The Mavericks were outshot 23-3 in the first.
Junior forward Emmi Leinonen cut the Mavericks deficit in half with her second goal of the season just :31 into the second period. Sophomore defenseman Emilia Andersson earned the helper on the play.
With Wisconsin on the power play, Brooke Ammerman found the back of the net for the second time in the game at the 7:32 mark of the second, putting Wisconsin up, 3-1.
Points leader and rookie Kathleen Rogan scored her fifth goal of the season, putting MSU within one goal at the 5:17 mark of the third. Andersson again assisted on the score.
Junior netminder Alli Altmann finished the game with 38 saves, while Wisconsin goaltender Alex Rigsby tallied 17 saves.
The second and third periods were much more balanced in the shots category, as MSU had 16 to the Badgers 18. Wisconsin totaled 41 shots to MSU’s 19 in the contest.
The Mavericks finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Wisconsin went 2-for-7.
The two teams will wrap up the WCHA-series tomorrow afternoon at 2:07 p.m. in Madison,Wis.
