Houghton, Mich. --- For the second consecutive night, Michigan Tech scored the first two goals of the game, but the result Saturday was somewhat different with Minnesota State coming back to claim a 5-5 tie.

The Huskies struck first at 3:27 of the opening period after Mikael Lickteig knocked in a rebound off of a shot from Daniel Sova initially stopped by Maverick junior netminder Austin Lee. Then, at 4:37,  Alex MacLeod went in uncontested on a shorthanded situation to beat Lee high over the glove side.

The Mavericks responded with three straight goals before the end of the period to take a 3-2 lead. Sophomore defenseman Tyler Elbrecht got his first career goal on a wrap-around effort at 7:13. Senior defenseman Kurt Davis then got his first goal of the year after redirecting a rebound past MTU Josh Robinson to tie the game at 12:08. Junior forward Joe Schiller shorthanded goal at 13:58 then gave the Mavericks their first lead and chased Robinson from the MTU net.

The Huskies came back to outscore the Mavericks, 2-1, in the second period, despite MSU's 16-12 advantage in shots on goal. Jacob Johnstone scored for MTU at 1:31 before Maverick defenseman Cameron Cooper's wrist shot from the point at 12:54 found its way past the goal line. The Huskies drew even with a power play marker from Alex MacLeod at 19:30 to make it a 4-4 game at the end of the periodThe two teams traded third period goals to force the overtime.

Steven Seigo gave the Huskies a 5-4 edge at 11:13, but freshman forward Chase Grant's first career goal, which came on a deflection with the Mavericks on the power play at 15:20, equaled the score at 5-5.

And that's the way the game ended with neither team able to score in overtime.

Davis ended the game with a goal and two assists in the game. Lee stopped 27 shots as the Mavericks outshot their opponents by a 46-32 margin.

The Mavericks, now 0-1-3 (0-1-1 WCHA) on the year, square-off vs. Colorado College next weekend in Mankato Friday and Saturday.
