Buganski and Smith Tally Shootout Goals in Thriller

     Bemidji, Minn. --- After a long break from Western Collegiate Hockey Association action, Minnesota State earned their third shootout victory of the season after a earning a 2-2 tie with Bemidji State tonight.

With the tie, Mavericks are now 4-10-5 overall and 2-8-5-3 in WCHA action,

The Mavericks and Beavers opened up competition with a scoreless first period with the MSU out shooting BSU, 13-9.

The Beavers lit the lamp early in the second with a even strength goal scored by sophomore forward Emily Erickson. The goal was assisted by junior forward Erin Cody.

Later in the second the Beavers increased their lead to 2-0 on a power play goal scored by rookie forward Makenzine Thurston. Sophomore blueliner Monatna Vickorek and rookie defenseman Erika Wheelhouse earned assists on the goal.

The Mavericks began the third period down 2-0 and tallied their first score of the contest just 1:27 into the period. Junior forward Lisa Edman cut the Beavers lead to one on her sixth goal of the season assisted by senior captain Kala Buganski and rookie blueliner Erika Magnusson. Magnusson's assist marked the first point of her career.

Shortly after Edman's goal, just 2:46 into the third, freshman forward Lauren Smith tied up the contest at two apiece with an unassisted goal. The goal marked the fourth of the year for the rookie giving her 13 points on the season.

With the two teams knotted up at two, they headed to overtime and the contest ended in a tie. The two teams would then head to a shootout.

After MSU missed their first shootout opportunity, the Beavers capitalized on their opening shooter giving them a 1-0 lead. Smith and Buganski each netted their shootout opportunities giving the Mavericks a 2-1 shootout win.

Maverick netminder Paige Thunder finished the contest with 31 saves and a .939 save percentage. The Mavericks finished 0-5 with an extra skater while the Beavers finished 1-3. BSU outshot the mavericks 33-31 in the contest.

The Mavericks and Beavers wrap up the series in Bemidji, Minn. tomorrow afternoon at 3:07 p.m.
