Box Score Minneapolis, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women wrapped up their series with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers at Ridder Arena Saturday afternoon in front of 1,361 fans. The Mavericks were defeated by a score of 4-1.
The Gophers took the early 1-0 lead at the 13:39 mark in the first period. Senior forward Brittany Francis tallied goal number eight of the season on a scramble in front of the net. Francis was assisted by rookie defender Megan Bozek.
At the 7:37 mark in the second period, rookie forward Lauren Smith evened up the contest for the Mavericks on a scrappy rebound on Gopher goaltender Alyssa Gorgan’s glove side. Rookie defender Erika Magnusson and senior forward Kala Buganski earned assists on the equalizer.
It didn’t take long in the second period for the Gophers to reclaim their lead. Junior forward Emily West tallied goal number 17 of the season on a power play opportunity on assists from Francis and Sarah Erickson.
The Gophers added two more goals in the third period scored by junior Terra Rasmussen and sophomore Ann Schleper.
The Gophers outshot the Mavericks 31-24. Minnesota finished the contest 2-6 on power play chances, while Minnesota State finished 0-6. Sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann finished the game with 27 saves.
The Mavericks (4-17-5, 2-15-5-3 WCHA) will travel to St. Cloud to take on the Huskies in WCHA action next Friday, February 5 at the National Hockey Center. The puck will drop at 2:07 p.m.
