Mavericks Drop First Game of 2010

Box Score Crookston, Minn. --- The 11th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks were defeated by the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday afternoon, 88-74, in Crookston, Minn.

With sophomore forward Laura Weber winning the tip-off, senior guard Tiffany Moe opened the game with a jumper for the Mavericks. Minnesota State seemed to have the momentum set for the game. As Crookston fought back tying the game five separate times in the first half.

With 8:18 left in the first half the Golden Eagles took an eight point lead on the Mavericks as MSU was outrebounded 23-16. The Golden Eagles put down seven three point shots on the Mavericks three in the first half. Ending the first half the Mavericks faced a 16 point deficit (50-34) to the Golden Eagles. 

Minnesota State was led in the first half by sophomore guard Lauren Barber with eight points followed by Weber and freshman forward Ali Wilkinson both with six points.  At the half the Mavericks were shooting 40 percent from the field.   

The Mavericks started the second half giving up a jumper to the Golden Eagles. Sophomore guard Jennie Noreen put down an and-one jumper and a three point shot to get the Mavericks going in the second half.  With 7:47 left in the game the Golden Eagles took a 24 point lead on the Mavericks. Finishing it off for the Mavericks freshman guard Sarah Wiens put down a three point shot and freshman forward Stephanie Haight put down a jumper to end it for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State shot 27.3 percent from the arc and 42.9 percent from the field compared to the Golden Eagles shooting percentage of 50 from both the field and the arc.
 
Maverick leaders were; Noreen with 18 points,  Barber and Weber both tallied 10 points for the Mavericks. Weber and Noreen both grabbed a team-high of six rebounds. As the Mavericks were outrebounded 36-42.

The Mavericks now 8-3 overall and  3-1 in the NSIC continue their roadtrip as they travel to Moorhead, Minn. to take on the Dragons of MSU Moorhead, Sunday at 4 p.m.
