Mavericks and Beavers to Tango in Bemidji This Weekend

12/8/2009 1:32:57 PM

On Tap:    Minnesota State (7-8-1 overall, 5-8-1 WCHA) is scheduled for a pair of nonconference contests this weekend when it travels to Bemidji State (13-2-1 overall, 8-0-0 CHA) this weekend.  The Mavericks and the Beavers square-off at John S. Glas Fieldhouse (2,399) in Bemidji, Minn., Friday at 7:35 p.m. and Saturday at 7:05 p.m..

About the MSU-BSU Series:   The Mavericks stand 33-44-13 in the all-time series with the Beavers, but have won the last four meetings, including 5-2 and 4-2 wins in Mankato last year. Senior forward James Gaulrapp (2-3--5 in 4 GP) and junior defenseman Kurt Davis (1-4--5 in 4 GP) rank as MSU’s top-active scorers vs. BSU.  Head coach Troy Jutting stands 11-4-2 as a college head coach in games vs. the Beavers.

MSU - BSU Hockey Connections:  MSU’s connection to BSU is multi-layered, not the least of which will be the Beavers and the Mavericks becoming conference-mates next year.  The Mavericks and BSU are both former members of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.  MSU head coach Troy Jutting and BSU head coach Tom Serratore are former college freshman roommates (Serratore played the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons at MSU before transferring to Bemidji State) and BSU senior forward Chris McKelvie is the younger brother of former MSU forward (and former BSU coaching graduate assistant) Ryan McKelvie (MSU 2002-06, 9-30--39 in 134 GP).  MSU assistant coach Todd Knott is a 2002 BSU grad where he was a forward from 1999-2002 (14-9--23 in 72 GP).

Mavericks Most Recently:  Minnesota State stands 7-8-1 overall and is 5-8-1 in WCHA action after splitting a home-and-home league series with the University of Minnesota last weekend.  The Mavericks, who claimed a 3-1 win in Minneapolis before dropping a 6-2 decision to the Gophers in Mankato last Saturday, have won four of their last six contests.
