Box Score Mankato, Minn.—The 12
th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks defeated the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State, 74-62, Saturday afternoon.
The victory marks the 569th win in program history and 77th in Taylor Center. The win against SMSU is the 19th victory and sixth consecutive victory against the Mustangs.
The Mavericks opened the game up with a three point shot by sophomore guard, Jennie Noreen. After lead changes in the first two minutes, MSU went on a scoring spree which gave them a nine-point lead with two minutes left in the first half. Contributing to the scoring was Noreen scoring 13 points, freshman forward Ali Wilkinson with eight points and nine rebounds in the first half.
SMSU fired back with jumpers in the last two minutes, tying the score at 35-35.
MSU finished the first half shooting 32.4 percent from the field and 75 percent at the free throw line. The Mavericks earned seven points off of turnovers and ten points in the paint. Minnesota State won the battle-of-the-boards to the Mustangs 27-22 in the first half.
Coming out in the second period the Mavericks started out slow allowing the Mustangs to convert on three layups and two jump shots, taking the lead over the Mavericks by nine points.
The lead by SMSU, not lasting long as MSU’s senior guard Tiffany Moe went on a scoring rampage scoring 13 points in the second half. After gaining the lead with four minutes left in the game, the Mavericks never looked back, as Wilkinson, Noreen, senior forward Liz Trauger, and Moe all made crucial shots in the last minutes of the game.
Wilkinson earned her second career double-double this afternoon scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 boards.
Noreen tied her career-high of 21 points this afternoon while Moe tied her season-high of seven rebounds and tallied a season-high 19 points. Trauger helped lead the Mavericks scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds in the victory.
MSU won the battle-of-the-boards 50-41 and grabbed four steals. The Mavericks shot 78.8 percent at the free-throw line while scoring 15 points off of Mustang turnovers.
The 12th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks now, 6-1, will host the University of Mary Marauders, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Taylor Center.
