Looking Ahead: The 11th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks will travel to Bemidji, Minn. to take on the Beavers of Bemidji State, Saturday afternoon. The game is slated for 3 p.m. and will be the last game for the Mavericks in 2009.
What’s in a Win: A win Saturday would mark the 572nd win in program history...A victory would also mark the 45th win away from the Taylor Center....It would also mark the fourth consecutive win against the Beavers...A win Saturday would be the 41st win for the Mavericks under head coach Pam Gohl.
MSU-BSU Notables: Saturday’s game against Bemidji will be the 33rd match-up between the two teams. MSU has a winning record against the Beavers of 21-11. The first time the two teams met was back in 1976, MSU lost to the Beavers, 48-41. In the 2007-08 season MSU recorded it’s largest victory over the Beavers defeating them by 52 points, (106-54). Last season, MSU defeated Bemidji on the road, 81-64.
Beaver Basics: The Beavers ended their 2008-09 campaign with an overall record of 3-24 and 1-19 in the NSIC. Bemidji returns three starters from last season. A top returner for the Beavers is sophomore guard Sydney Epema who averaged 11.1 points per game last season.
In the 2009 NSIC Women’s Basketball Pre-Season Coaches Poll, Bemidji was ranked 13th with 37 points. The Beavers have started their 2009-10 season 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC, averaging 78.7 points per game. Freshman guard Katie Pettit leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game this season, followed by Epema who is averaging 11.0 points per game. The Beavers are coached by Mike Curfman (fifth season), assisted by Krissi Super and graduate assistant Pamela Findlay.
Who We Are: According to official University guidelines, there are only three acceptable usages of the school name. The first official acceptable name is “Minnesota State University, Mankato” and is to only be used on the first reference of the school. Following that, the only other acceptable usages of the school name are “Minnesota State,” or “MSU” and no others.
