Badger’s Power Play Helps Wisconsin Top MSU

Mankato, Minn. --- After falling 3-0 Friday night to the University of Wisconsin, the Maverick women’s hockey team lost to the Badgers 6-2 Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena.

The Badgers opened the scoring midway through the first period. Breann Fryka’s slapshot beat sophomore goaltender Alli Altmann ( Eagan, Minn.) high on the glove side. 

The Badgers continued the offensive attack early in the second period. Fryka handled the puck nicely and used a powerful slap-shot to beat Altmann for her second goal of the afternoon at 1:26. Badger left wing Carolyne Provost gave Wisconsin a 3-0 at 3:02. Geena Prough assisted Prevost on the second period goal. 

UW continued the scoring barrage in the second period. The Badgers took advantage of an extra skater as junior Kelly Nash beat Altmann at 10:35.  Nash was set up by the combination of Stefanie McKeough and Brooke Ammerman. 

Christina Lee (Maple Plain, Minn.) put Minnesota State on the board at 12:28 into the second period as she beat Badger goaltender Alannah McCready. Amy Udvig (New Brighton, Minn.) assisted on Lee’s second period goal and was MSU’s first of the series and her third goal of the season.

The Badgers regained momentum as they took advantage of back-to-back 5 on 3 power plays.  Mallory Deleuce and Geena Prough both scored for the Badgers early in the third stanza.

Kala Buganski (Andover, Minn.) capped off the scoring at 12:26 in the third.  Holly Snyder (Kenosha, Wis.) and Lauren Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) assisted Buganski on the Maverick power play goal. 

The Badgers’ power play was efficient all afternoon as they ended 3-6 while MSU finished the afternoon 1-7 with the extra skater. 

The Mavericks, now 4-8-4 overall and 2-8-4-2 in WCHA action resume play January 2nd and 3rd at the Easton Holiday Showcase in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
