Box Score Mankato, Minn.— The 11th-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks defeated the Marauders of the University of Mary, 68-64 at Taylor Center.
The win marks the 570th victory in program history and the 78th at the Taylor Center.
Sophomore guard Jennie Noreenopened up the game with a fast break layup for the first two points of the game. The Mavericks allowed the Marauders to take a small lead for most of the first half, with the largest lead of six points at the 13:24 mark of the first half.
MSU fought back tying the game five times. Senior guard Tiffany Moe scored a crucial three-point shot with 1:30 left in the first half to give MSU a one point lead going into the half 30-29.
The Mavericks were led in the first half by; Moe and Noreen both with nine points. Sophomore center Laura Weberhit the boards bringing down six rebounds. MSU earned three steals handing out nine assists. The Mavericks tallied seven points off of Marauder turnovers and earned four points on fast break plays.
Moe started the second half with a free throw and a three-point shot, giving the Mavericks a five point lead. MSU led the whole second half, not allowing the Marauders to take the lead or tie the game once. Minnesota State’s largest lead was eight points with two minutes left in the game. The Marauders came within two points with nine seconds left, as Trauger put down two free throws to give the Mavericks a four-point victory.
Moe led the Mavericks with a season-high 20 points taking six rebounds and earning a season-high seven assists in the game. Senior forward Liz Trauger contributed to the scoring with 17 points grabbing eight rebounds. Noreen totaled 13 points with taking away three steals.
MSU finished the game tallying 17 assists, bringing down 41 rebounds and taking eight steals from the Marauders. The Mavericks shot 70 percent at the free throw line and 32 percent from the field.
The Mavericks now 7-1 overall and 2-0 in NSIC will host the Northern State Wolves tomorrow night in Taylor Center at 6 p.m.
