Sioux Falls, S.D. — The Minnesota State Mavericks were defeated, 60-59, by the Warriors of Winona State in their second game of the 2009 Hoopsfest tournament.
Senior forward Liz Trauger got the game started with the first points off a fast break layup, setting the pace in the first half for the Mavericks. MSU only allowed Winona State to take the lead three times in the first half, never more than a two-point lead. The Mavericks highest lead came with 1:22 left in the first half where sophomore center Laura Weber scored her eighth point of the game off a layup, giving the Mavericks a 10-point lead. Leading the Mavericks in the first half was Weber with eight points, sophomore guard Jennie Noreen with seven and Trauger with six points. Minnesota State finished the first half with a seven point lead, 32-25.
Starting the second half for the Mavericks, senior guardTiffany Moe scored the first five points. MSU went on to take a 15 point lead with nine minutes left in the half. Battling with the Warriors, Winona State came back taking a one-point lead with 51 seconds left in the game. Moe scored a jumper to give the Mavericks a one point lead, but it wasn’t enough when the Warriors scored a jumper with five seconds left, giving them a one-point victory over the Mavericks.
Leading the Mavericks was Moe with 16 points, Weber with 12 points, seven rebounds, and Noreen with nine points. MSU totaled 33 rebounds, 12 assists and six steals in the game.
The sixth-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks now, 5-1 will play host to the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State, Saturday at 2 p.m., in Taylor Center.
