Mavericks Thrash Warriors in Pepsi Tip-Off

Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks defeated Waldorf College, 104-77, in their final game of the ninth annual Pepsi Tip-Off tournament at Taylor Center.

The win for the Mavericks marks the first victory over Waldorf in program history. It also improves MSU's record to 16-3 in the Pepsi Tip-Off and marks the ninth consecutive win in the event. The win is also the 75th victory in Taylor Center.

MSU started the game allowing the Warriors to score first. Not allowing the Warriors to stay ahead, the first half had three lead changes and seven tied scores. With three minutes left in the first half sophomore guard Jennie Noreen(Avon, Minn.) drains a three-point field goal. The lead would not be taken away from the Mavericks from that point on. Finishing the first half  with a 17 point lead, scoring a three-pointer as the last shot of the half was sophomore guard Lauren Barber(Owatonna, Minn.). Leading the Mavericks in the first half was Noreen with 17 points and Barber with 12 points. Grabbing the boards was senior forward Liz Trauger (Livermore, Iowa), with seven rebounds.

Entering the second half with a comfortable 17 point lead the Mavericks didn't hold back. MSU scored 34 points off the bench in the second half and scored 26 points in the paint. Senior guard Tiffany Moe (Brookings, S.D.) put down 10 points in the second half.

Minnesota State totalled 44 rebounds, 19 assists and 11 steals in the game. MSU shot 49 percent from the field and 70 percent on free-throws. Leading the Mavericks were: Noreen with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists, Barber with 15 points and Moe with 15 points. Trauger dominated the boards with eight rebounds.

The Pepsi Tip-Off awards were given as followed: Most Assists went to Jennie Noreen (10), Most Rebounds to Rachel Hananem (Waldorf, 21), Most Points to Talisha Barlow (St. Cloud State, 49), and MVP going to Jennie Noreen.

The Mavericks increase their record to 3-0, and will take on Buena Vista Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Taylor Center.
