Women Icers Fall to Golden Gophers at All Seasons Arena

Box Score Mankato, Minn.---  The Maverick women welcomed the University of Minnesota to All Seasons Arena Friday night. The #3 ranked Golden Gophers came in with an 8-2-0 overall record and a 6-2-0 record in WCHA action. The Gophers used a strong second period to jump out early and rode the momentum to a 4-1 victory over the Mavericks.

Following a scoreless first period, the University of Minnesota got on the board first as Kelli Blankenship beat Minnesota State goaltender Alli Altmann early in the second period at the 8:06 mark.  Emily West and Brittany Francis both assisted Blankenship on the play.

The Golden Gophers continued the scoring later in the second when sophomore Anne Schleper beat Altmann with 2:53 remaining in the period.  Kelly Seeler and Sarah Erickson assisted on the Schleper goal, Erickson’s first of two assists on the night.

Emily West finished the scoring barrage late in the second period as the Golden Gophers went into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.  West’s slap shot hit the post and bounced in for Minnesota. Sarah Erickson and Anne Schleper both assisted on the Golden Gopher goal. 

Minnesota State University answered early in the third period as sophomore forward Emmi Leinonen beat Minnesota goaltender Noora Raty with 18:52 left in third.  Senior forward Ashley Young and junior forward Lisa Edman both assisted on goal for the Mavericks.

The Golden Gophers answered right back as Sarah Erickson beat Altmann at the 7:44 mark in the third period.  Brittany Francis and Megan Bozek both assisted on the Erickson goal.  The assist by Francis was her second of the night.

The Golden Gophers out shot the Mavericks 37-30 in the game. Minnesota finished 2-8 on power play opportunities while the Mavericks were 1-5 with the extra skater.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:07 at All Seasons Arena.
