Minnesota State Drops 5-2 Decision to Minnesota-Duluth Friday
Bulldogs Outshoot Mavericks 48-38 as MSU Drops First Game of 2009-10 Campaign
                                                                                                      
          Duluth, Minn. ---    Minnesota-Duluth handed Minnesota State its first loss of 2009-10 by handing the visiting Mavericks a 5-2 defeat Friday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game played at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board first on a shorthanded goal from sophomore Mike Connolly at 13:12 of the opening stanza with Connolly looking off a teammate to beat MSU sophomore Austin Lee with a shot low on the stickside. The Mavericks responded shortly there after when freshman Eriah Hayes picking up his first career collegiate goal on a scramble on the rightside of the UMD net at 15:13.   UMD was able to regain its one-goal edge at 18:59 after Jack Connolly put a nice feed from Justin Fontaine past Lee at 18:59 and the Bulldogs headed into the locker room owning a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
 
UMD owned a 24-9 advantage in shots on goal in the second period, but neither team was able to score.
 
The Bulldogs made it 5-1 with a power play marker by Justin Fontaine at 8:07 and the Mavericks closed out the scoring at 16:21 on a rebound goal by senior forward Geoff Irwin. Freshman forward Evan Mosey picked up his first career point on that goal with and assist and freshman forward Tyler Pitlick extended his scoring streak to three games by also assisting on Irwin’s tally.
 
UMD, which is now 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 WCHA,  outshot MSU by a 48-36 margin.    Now 2-1-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in WCHA games, the Mavericks got 43 saves from Lee in the loss.
 
The two teams are scheduled to face-off Saturday in Duluth at 7:07 p.m.
