Karson Arrenholz enters his sixth season as a member of the Minnesota State men's basketball coaching staff and fifth season as an assistant coach. During the 2019-20 season, Arrenholz served as a graduate assistant coach with the Mavericks.
During his first season as an assistant coach with the Mavericks during the 2020-21 season, Arrenholz helped coach All-NSIC South Division First Team honoree Quincy Anderson and NSIC South Division Newcomer of the Year Devonte Thedford. Minnesota State boasted a 10-7 record during the shortened 2020-21 season as it advanced to the NSIC Tournament. The Mavericks again reached the NSIC Tournament during the 2021-22 season as they posted a 16-10 record, including a 9-9 NSIC record. Anderson would claim All-NSIC Second Team honors as well. The 2022-23 season, saw the Mavericks finish with a 17-12 record as Malik Willingham received All-NSIC First Team honors and Trevor Moore claimed All-NSIC Second Team accolades.
Minnesota State rewrote the record book during the 2023-24 season that saw the Mavericks claim their first NCAA Division II Championship in team history behind a 35-2 record. Along the way, MSU set team single-season records in scoring (3.141), field goals (1,159), field goals attempted (2,362), three point field goals (342), three point field goals attempted (895), rebounds (1,431), games played (37), wins (35) and winning percentage (.945). The Mavericks also claimed their fifth NSIC regular season championship and their third NSIC Tournament Championship.
In total, four Mavericks claimed All-NSIC honors during their 2023-24 championship season. Malik and Kyreese Willingham were both named to the All-NSIC First Team, with Malik Willingham also garnering NSIC Player of the Year honors. Justin Eagins and Dylan Peeters earned All-NSIC Second Team honors as well. Malik Willingham would later be named to the D2CCA All-American First Team.
Prior to joining the Minnesota State coaching staff, Arrenholz played two seasons (2017-19) with the Mavericks. Arrenholz played in 50 games during his two seasons with the Mavericks, including six starts. MSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament during both of his playing seasons, including a trip to the "Sweet 16" in 2018. As a senior, Arrenholz was named to the NSIC All-Academic Team and the NABC Honors Court for his efforts in the classroom.
Arrenholz received his bachelor's degree in marketing at Minnesota State in 2019 and is currently pursuing his master's degree in sport management with American Public University.
