Alex Schmitz

Alex Schmitz was named head coach of the Minnesota State men's golf program in the summer of 2021 and the women's golf coach in 2022. 

Since joining the Mavericks, they have had fantastic success.  

In 2023-24, the Maverick men's golf team ran away with the NSIC Tournament championship, winning the event by 23 strokes posting a 286-296-276--858, the lowest three-round total in league tournament history. Minnesota State had the top three individual golfers in the tournament and all five Mavericks finished in the top 20. For his coaching efforts, Schmitz was named the league's Coach of the Year, an award he also garnered on the women's side, becoming the first coach in league history to sweep the men's and women's coach fo the year honors in the NSIC.

Additionally, this past season, the Mavericks had two men's golfers receive First-Team All-Conference honors in Ben Laffen and Max Brud and one women's golfer earn the award in Anna Cihak. A pair of women's golfers in Kelly Winter and Sammy Youngquist earned Second-Team All-NSIC efforts, while Karson Patten also earned the honor on the men's side. Patten and freshman Claire Schweim were also named the league's Newcomers of the Year on the men's and women's side respectively. 

A native of Faribault, Minn., Schmitz had served as the Director of Golf/Head Boys Varsity Coach at Faribault High School since 2017.  Schmitz, who spent the 2012-13 season as a member of the Bemidji State men's golf team, was an assistant coach/swing coach with the boys and girls golf program at South Washingto Schools (East Ridge High School) in 2017. Schmitz resides in Eagle Lake and has a daughter, Laiken.
