Mavericks Split Doubleheader at Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. — Minnesota State (27-21, 15-10 NSIC) split a doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth (28-19, 13-11 NSIC) at Malosky Stadium on Saturday, April 25, securing an 8–6 victory in the first game before falling 7–4 in the second.

Game 1 | Minnesota State 8, Minnesota Duluth 6
The Mavericks' offense was highlighted by three doubles and nine walks, contributing to a decisive two-run eighth inning. MSU opened the game strong with four runs in the first inning. Chloe Brandt, Finley Anderson, and Gianna Lara all walked to load the bases. Maddie Helin's walk brought Brandt home, while Hannah Tong's double to right field scored Anderson and Lara. A sacrifice fly from Maddie Oetzmann allowed Helin to score, giving the Mavericks a 4–0 lead after the first inning.

In the second inning, UMD responded with two runs on a solo home run and an RBI single. Minnesota Duluth took the lead in the third inning with three more runs, highlighted by an inside-the-park home run, making it 5–4.

MSU answered in the fourth inning. Ysabel Lerma, pinch-running for Oetzmann, scored on Ireland Broderick's double, and Lara followed with an RBI single to bring Broderick home and give the Mavericks a 6–5 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth inning with a solo home run, evening the score at 6–6.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning when MSU secured the win. Carly Kimmes walked and advanced to third on a fielder's choice before scoring on Anderson's double. Broderick also crossed the plate on the play, sealing the 8–6 victory.

Oetzmann delivered a complete-game performance, pitching eight innings while allowing nine hits and six earned runs with six strikeouts. Despite allowing three home runs, Oetzmann improved to 12-5 on the season.

Anderson drove in two runs and added a double, while Tong also recorded two RBIs and a double. Broderick scored twice and tallied two hits, including a double.

Game 2 | Minnesota State 4, Minnesota Duluth 7
In the second game, Minnesota State fell 7–4 despite collecting 11 hits, including four doubles and a home run.

MSU took an early lead in the first inning as Anderson walked and advanced on Lara's single before Helin doubled to right field to bring Anderson home. The game was tied 1–1 after the inning. In the second, Kimmes walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Lara, giving MSU a 2–1 lead.

Izzy Hycnar extended the lead in the third inning with a solo home run to right center, but the Bulldogs responded with three runs of their own to take a 4–3 advantage. UMD added another run in the fifth to push the lead to 6–3.

In the sixth inning, Tong doubled and later scored on a single by Hycnar, but the Bulldogs answered with a run of their own to maintain a 7–4 lead. The Mavericks were unable to close the gap in the seventh.

Jorey Fry started in the circle for MSU, pitching 4 2/3 innings while allowing eight hits and six runs, three earned, with four strikeouts and five walks. Lucy Porter provided relief, tossing 1 1/3 innings and allowing one hit and one earned run. Fry took the loss, while Porter delivered a steady relief appearance.

Hycnar led the offense with a home run, two hits, and one RBI. Lara added two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Brandt recorded two hits, while Helin contributed a double and an RBI.

"I thought we had some timely hitting in game one. Helin made some great plays in the outfield and Oetzmann did a great job controlling and spotting her pitches," said head coach Kristle Wolcott. "In game two we didn't play clean defense and it put too much pressure on our offense."
