MSU and SMSU Split Tight NSIC Doubleheader

MANKATO, Minn. — The Mavericks of Minnesota State (21-1, 8-2 NSIC) split a doubleheader against Southwest Minnesota State (22-14, 8-2 NSIC) at the Maverick Sports Dome on Thursday, April 2, winning the first game 9-1 and falling in the second 3-1.

Game 1 | Minnesota State 9, Southwest Minnesota State 1
In the first game, MSU cruised to a commanding victory, thanks to a powerful six-run second inning that set the tone for their dominant performance. The action began with Nyah Hulbert singling and swiping second base, then crossing home plate courtesy of a single from Carly Kimmes. Shortstop Chloe Brandt followed with a double to drive in Kimmes, and Finley Anderson's single brought Brandt home. Senior Gianna Lara capped off the inning with a three-run blast, scoring Hannah Tong and Anderson, pushing the Mavericks to a 6-0 lead.

The fifth inning saw the Mavericks add to their lead, with Brandt doubling to allow Maddie Helin to score. Anderson then doubled, sending Brandt and pinch hitter Ireland Broderick home. The Mustangs managed a single run in their half of the fifth but ultimately fell to Minnesota State 9-1.

Freshman Jorey Fry pitched a complete game gem for the Mavericks, surrendering just three hits and one earned run over five innings. Fry faced 24 batters, tossing 102 pitches with 56 strikes, striking out three while walking five. Despite the walks, Fry expertly managed contact, inducing nine flyouts and three groundouts to seal the win.

Brandt led the Mavericks with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs. Anderson added three hits and three RBIs, including a double, while Lara contributed a home run and three RBIs.

Game 2 | Minnesota State 1, Southwest Minnesota State 3
In the second game, the Mavericks couldn't quite top Southwest Minnesota State, falling 3-1. Minnesota State put up a fight with seven hits, including a home run, but it wasn't enough to outpace the Mustangs. Southwest Minnesota took the lead in the third inning with a single to right center, bringing a runner home, and a steal allowed another runner to cross the plate, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage.

The Mavericks answered back in the fifth when Helin launched a solo home run to center field, closing the gap to 2-1. However, in the sixth, Southwest Minnesota stretched its lead with a single through the right side that sent another runner home, cementing the 3-1 final.

Maddie Oetzmann pitched a solid game for the Mavericks, going six innings and giving up six hits and three earned runs, with five strikeouts and just one walk. Oetzmann faced 27 batters and threw 89 pitches, 59 of them strikes, holding the Mustangs scoreless in four of six innings.
