Mavericks Stay Perfect in NSIC Play with Sweep of Northern State

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State (17-11, 4-0 NSIC) had a thrilling day at the Maverick Sports Dome, securing a 5-4 extra innings victory and following it up with a commanding 9-1 win over Northern State (8-11, 0-3 NSIC) on Saturday (March 21).

Game 1 | Minnesota State 5, Northern State 4

In the first game, the Mavericks edged out a triumph in dramatic fashion. Northern State drew first blood in the second inning off a solo home run, putting the visitors up 1-0. Minnesota State responded in the third when Ysabel Lerma, pinch running for Hannah Tong, crossed home plate on a bases-loaded walk by Carly Kimmes. Gianna Lara followed suit, scoring on Maddie Helin's sacrifice fly to give the Mavericks a 2-1 advantage.

However, the Wolves clawed back in the fifth, scoring three runs with an RBI single and an RBI double to reclaim the lead at 4-2. Not to be outdone, the Mavericks leveled the game in the sixth. With runners in scoring position, an error allowed Finley Anderson to reach base, sending Helin and Nyah Hulbert home to tie the game at 4-4.

The tension carried into extra innings, but Minnesota State seized its moment in the eighth. Tong delivered a single up the middle to drive in Chloe Brandt, clinching the game-winning run and a 5-4 victory.

Maddie Oetzmann took the start in the circle, pitching four innings while allowing seven hits and four earned runs, striking out three. Lucy Porter dominated in relief, tossing four scoreless innings and surrendering just one hit. Tong led the offense with three hits and a key RBI, while Anderson added a double and a walk. Ireland Broderick contributed two hits, including a double, helping advance runners throughout the contest. Porter's effort in the circle proved instrumental in securing the win.

Game 2 | Minnesota State 9, Northern State 1

In the second game, the Mavericks kept their perfect conference record intact with a powerful offensive display, totaling 13 hits, including three doubles. Minnesota State wasted no time, scoring four runs in the first inning. Brandt opened with a single, followed by Anderson drawing a walk. Tong drove in Brandt with a single, and Lara followed with a two-RBI single to bring home Tong and Anderson. Helin capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, making it 4-0.

Minnesota State added to its lead in the fourth. Helin doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice from Broderick, while Tong added another RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0. Northern State broke through in the fifth with a solo home run, but the Mavericks responded quickly. Avery Dorman singled, Broderick doubled, and Brandt delivered a two-RBI double. Anderson followed with an RBI single to score Brandt, sealing the 9-1 victory.

Jorey Fry was stellar in the circle, pitching all five innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run, striking out four. Brandt led the offense with four hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Anderson recorded two hits, a run, and an RBI, while Tong added two hits and two RBIs.

"Although we left too many runners in scoring position, we stepped up in the sixth to push two runs to tie it and grind out a victory in extra innings," said head coach Kristle Wolcott. "I think Lucy Porter did a great job coming in relief to close it down. Game two we were locked in early and let our offense carry us. We did a great job up and down the lineup."

Minnesota State will face Minot State on Saturday, March 28, with first pitch scheduled for noon in Minot, N.D.
