MSU Secures Walk-Off Victory, Splits Pair in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Minnesota State Mavericks wrapped up play at The Space Coast Spring Games on Tuesday (March 17) with a thrilling extra-inning victory over Purdue Northwest (14-8) and a matchup against Lewis (6-9).

Game 1 | Minnesota State 2, Lewis 8
In the first game, the Mavericks (13-11) stumbled in an 8–2 loss to Lewis. Minnesota State managed to score both of its runs in the third inning, with three doubles highlighting the effort. Lewis jumped ahead early, taking a 3–0 lead in the second inning behind a two-run double and an RBI single.

MSU answered back in the third as Chloe Brandt got things rolling with a single, and Carly Kimmes followed with a double to bring Brandt home. Senior Gianna Lara added a sacrifice fly to score Kimmes, cutting the deficit to 3–2. However, Lewis responded in the sixth with a three-run home run and added another RBI single to secure the 8–2 final.

Freshman Jorey Fry started for Minnesota State, pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs with three walks and one strikeout. Lucy Porter relieved Fry and threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs, including a home run, while striking out one and walking one.

Kimmes led the offense with a run, a hit, and an RBI, including a double. Ireland Broderick added two hits, including a double, in three at-bats. Brandt recorded a hit and a run while adding two assists defensively, and Lara drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Game 2 | Minnesota State 2, Purdue Northwest 1
In their second game of the day, MSU earned a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Purdue Northwest in extra innings.

Purdue Northwest struck first in the second inning with a solo home run to take a 1–0 lead. Minnesota State responded in the third as Brandt singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a groundout by Kimmes to even the score at 1–1.

The game remained tied through regulation, forcing extra innings. In the eighth, the Mavericks capitalized. With Kimmes placed on second, Finley Anderson delivered a clutch double to right center, scoring the winning run and sealing the 2–1 victory.

Maddie Oetzmann was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game effort with eight innings pitched, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out five and walking one. She threw 66 strikes on 113 pitches and improved to 7–3 on the season.

Anderson's game-winning double highlighted her performance, as she finished with a hit and a walk. Lara added two hits, while Brandt scored a run, recorded a hit, and stole a base.

The Mavericks open NSIC play on Friday, March 20, against Jamestown at noon inside the MSU All-Sports Dome in Mankato, Minn.
