Drake Hayward wrestling at the NCAA Super Region V Championships

Beckett, Hush, Marko and Hayward Advance to NCAA Championships

MARSHALL, Minn. --- Minnesota State had nine wrestlers place at the NCAA Super Region V Championships Saturday, with four advancing to the NCAA Championships, Saturday evening.

Junior Chase Beckett (133 lbs.) and senior Drake Hayward (174 lbs.) finished second, while sophomore Colton Hush (141 lbs.) and senior Kole Marko (165 lbs.) finished third to advance to the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA Championships will be held on March 13-14 at the Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

As a team, MSU finished third in the team standings with 109.5 points. UW-Parkside finished first with 146.5 points, with St. Cloud State following in second place with 127.5 points.

"I'm really proud of our team's effort today," head coach Jim Makovsky said. "Not just the guys who competed but our entire team who is here supporting their brothers. This team has been one of my favorite teams in my career because they're a true team."

"Our guys wrestled with a lot of heart and what I would call competitive maturity," Makovsky added. "As a coach, I don't think I can be much prouder of a group of young guys."

Sophomore Jacob Fitzpatrick (125 lbs.) just missed the NCAA Championships cut as he finished in fourth place. Fitzpatrick posted wins in his first two matches, including a 16-1 tech fall at 6:32 over Preston Xayachak (SMSU) in the quarterfinals. He then fell to Sloane Johannsen in the semifinals by a 2-0 decision, before bouncing back with a 16-7 major decision win over Clayson Mele (MSUM) in the consolation semifinals. In the third place match, Fitzpatrick fell to Shane Corrigan via a 15-7 major decision.

Junior Chase Beckett (133 lbs.) posted wins in his first three matches, including 16-1 tech fall at 7:00 in the opening round against Chase Hanson (SMSU). In the championship match, Beckett and his opponent Dominic Ducato were scoreless after the first round. Both grapplers recorded an escape over the next two rounds, but Ducato was able to add another point via riding time to secure the 2-1 win.

Sophomore Colton Hush (141 lbs.) received a first round bye and then advance to the semifinals after recording a fall at 6:48 over SCSU's Jayce Luna. He suffered a 16-5 major decision loss in the semifinals, before bouncing back in the consolation semifinals with a 4-1 decision win over Krayle Stormer (NSU). In the third place match he recorded two takedowns and an escape against Troy Dolphin to secure third place with a 7-0 decision.

Junior Walker Bents (149 lbs.) reached the fifth place match after recording a 3-2 record in his first five matches. Against Kaden DeCoteau he managed to record a pair of reversals, but DeCoteau was able to secure the 7-4 decision win.

Senior Caleb Meunier (157 lbs.) lost his opening match, but then won his next three matches, including a fall at :24 against Tate Condezo, to advance to the third place match. In the third place match, Meunier fell to Griffin Lundeen (NSU) by a 7-2 decision to finish in fourth place, just missing the cut for the NCAA Championships.

Senior Kole Marko (165 lbs.) split his first two matches of the day, before posting a 4-1 decision win over Derek Johnson (SCSU) to advance to the third place match. Against Sioux Falls' Luke Swanson, Marko punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships as he scored a pin at 1:27 of the match.

Senior Drake Hayward (174 lbs.) opened the day with three wins, including a fall over Ashtin Johnson (USF) at 1:48 to advance to the championship match. In the championship match, Hayward faced Cody Gunderson, but it was Gunderson who was able to come away with the 10-9 decision win.

Sophomore Evan Farley (184 lbs.) lost his first match, but then won his next three matches, including a 15-0 tech fall over MSU Moorhead's Edon Davis, to advance to the third place match. In the third place match, Sullivan Ramos (UWP) was able to recorded the pin at 5:54.

Junior Jaquan East (197 lbs.) worked his was into the fifth place match, winning a pair of matches over Shafer Ehrmke (20-10 major decision) and Hank Meyer (5-3 decision). In the fifth place match, East fell to Ryan Hirschkorn via a 9-2 decision.

Sophomore Callen Smithpeter (285 lbs.) went 0-2 on the day including a 5-3 loss to Stetson Davis (USF) and a 4-2 decision vs. Max Balow (AU).
