Mavericks Suffer Overtime Defeat

MANKATO, Minn. – Oliver Peer scored 26 seconds into overtime to lift Bemidji State over No. 16 Minnesota State 1-0 Saturday night in CCHA men's hockey. Peer's wrist shot came off the rush and was unassisted as the teams skated to a series split at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, snapping a four-game win streak for the Mavericks.

Bemidji State freshman netminder Max Hildebrand made 18 saves for his second shutout of the season. Jack Smith led the Mavericks with four shots on goal.

The Mavericks (16-9-5, 12-7-3 CCHA) continue at Bowling Green on Friday, February 20 at 7:07 p.m. CT. Bemidji State (12-17-3, 10-11-3 CCHA) hosts St. Thomas next weekend in their final regular season series.

Scoreless after the first period, Alex Zetterberg one-timed a shot at the weak side dot and rang the puck off the post for the Mavericks at even strength to open the second. Later, Luigi Benincasa found Liam Watkins in the high slot for a strong chance, but goaltender Hildebrand shouldered the save.

At the 8:30 mark of the third period, it was Tracy's turn, as he slid across to deny Tory Lund at point blank range. Both teams killed minor penalties in the latter stage of the final frame and the teams headed to overtime with shots favoring the Beavers 22-18. Peer's goal was his 18th of the season.
