MANKATO, Minn. – Despite generating numerous scoring opportunities, the third-ranked Minnesota State women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Central Oklahoma Friday afternoon in its season opener at The Pitch.
The Mavericks nearly struck first in the seventh minute when freshman
Maddix Archer drew a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Archer's attempt was on frame, but UCO goalkeeper Avery Bass made the stop to keep the game scoreless.
Minnesota State continued to apply pressure throughout the first half. Archer,
Avery Korsching, and
Addison Clarey all placed shots on target, but Bass was up to the challenge, making four saves before the break. The Mavericks' back line, led by
Maclayne Menzel and
Anna Van Wyngarden, limited UCO to just a handful of chances, with goalkeeper
Lauren McAlpine recording a key save late in the half to preserve the shutout.
The second half was much of the same. Van Wyngarden's shot in the 51st minute forced Bass into another diving save, while Archer continued to pressure the Broncho defense with two more attempts on goal. The Mavericks earned seven second-half corner kicks, but the Bronchos' defense held strong.
McAlpine came up with her biggest moment in the 74th minute, stopping a close-range shot from Adria Ramirez to secure the clean sheet. The senior finished with three saves on the day.
Minnesota State outshot Central Oklahoma 15-11. With the result, Minnesota State opens the season 0-0-1. The Mavericks will look to build off Friday's performance when they return to The Pitch on Sunday to face No. 13 Central Missouri at 3 p.m.
