Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Johnson’s goal leads the Mavericks to beating #4 Grand Valley State 1-0

ALLENDALE, Mich. – In a battle between two of the nation's top Division II women's soccer programs, No. 3 Minnesota State pulled off a huge road win Friday night, defeating No. 4 Grand Valley State 1-0.

The first half was all about defense, with both teams trading chances but failing to break through. Minnesota State's back line, anchored by senior Anna Van Wyngarden and goalkeeper Lauren McAlpine, stood tall as the Lakers put together multiple attacks. McAlpine made a key save in the 24th minute and handled several dangerous crosses to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The second half opened with more pressure from Grand Valley, but the Mavericks absorbed it well and looked for their own opportunities in transition. The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute, when sophmore forward Marin Johnson found the back of the net. After a crisp pass from Maille Mathis, Johnson slipped past her defender and buried the shot to put MSU up 1-0.

The Mavericks stayed disciplined, clearing every dangerous ball and blocking shots in the box. McAlpine finished the night with four saves to earn her third shutout of the season, and Minnesota State improved to 2-0-1 on the year.

The Mavericks ended the night with eight total shots, three of them on goal, while Grand Valley outshot MSU 16-8. Despite the difference, it was Johnson's strike that stood as the game-winner.

"Heck of a game. Really proud of the fight, grit and determination our ladies displayed tonight. Grand Valley was very dangerous and we had to withstand some significant threats but we stayed composed, focused and executed and contested each threat. I was also really proud of the great energy and support our entire roster brought tonight, it certainly played a major role in coming away with the win." said head coach Brian Bahl

Minnesota State will be back on the road next Friday as they play the University of Mary at 3 p.m.
