MANKATO, Minn. – Ferris State ended No. 13 Minnesota State's seven game win streak 4-1 Saturday night at Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center. The Bulldogs evened the series and handed the Mavericks just their second regulation loss of the season (Oct. 10 vs. Omaha).
Minnesota State (11-3-4, 8-2-4 CCHA) travels to Augustana next week for a pair of games at Midco Arena.
Ferris State posted the only goal of the first period at even strength. Connor McGrath worked behind the goal line and fed it out in front for a one-timer by Caden Brown. Tyler Schleppe also assisted for the Bulldogs at 15:08.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a second period power play to make it 2-0. At 6:08, Gavin Best tipped in Xavier Jean-Louis' point shot in the high slot. John Lundy added a second assist on the play.
Jean-Louis took another wrist shot from the top of the point and found the back of the net through traffic in front of the crease. Lundy and Holden Doehl assisted on Ferris State's power play goal at 13:32. The Mavericks hit the crossbar less than a minute later but stayed off the scoreboard.
With the net empty late in the third period,
Evan Murr fed one across for
Jack Smith, who blasted through his sixth of the year. It was as close as the Mavericks would come to evening the game and Holden Doehl posted an empty net goal for FSU with 57 seconds remaining in regulation.
Martin Lundberg turned aside 19 shots in the win for the Bulldogs.
Alex Tracy marked 19 saves for Minnesota State. Ferris State finished 2-4 on the power play. The Mavericks went 0-4.
