MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State skated to a 1-1 overtime tie against Switzerland on Tuesday in a World Junior Pre-Tournament Series exhibition men's hockey game at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center. Switzerland scored the tying goal late in the third period and won in a shootout.

The Mavericks led 6-2 in shots after 20 minutes of play.
Liam Hupka rifled in a high shot from the point at even strength with 27 seconds remaining for the game's first tally.
Tristan Lemyre and
Jack Smith added assists on the delayed penalty.

Defense prevailed in a scoreless second period and Switzerland recorded seven shots compared to four for MSU.

Sawyer Scholl generated a high danger chance for the Mavericks just past the midpoint of the third period with a saucer pass on a 2-on-1 to
Ean Somoza, who rang the right post.

Later, Jamiro Ramiro Reber skated out from behind the goal line and scored with 17.2 seconds left in regulation for Switzerland to send the game to overtime.

The teams played a five-minute 3-on-3 extra session. Then Switzerland won a five-round shootout with the final goal scored by Robin Antenen.
Jordan Ronn was the lone goal scorer for MSU.

Max Beckford made 17 saves in goal for the Mavericks and Elijah Nuenschwander and Phileas Lachat stopped a combined 14 shots for Switzerland.

The Mavericks are off until January 2, when they play in the Coachella Cactus Cup in the opening game against UMass Lowell at 5:30 p.m. CT.
