Several Mavericks Place at Dakota Wesleyan Open

MITCHELL, S.D. --- #12 Minnesota State had several strong showings at the Dakota Wesleyan Open Saturday. Sophomore Colton posted a second place finish, while junior Jaquan East took fourth place and Elijah Reece finished fifth.

At 141lbs., sophomore Colton Hush went 4-1 on the day as he finished second. He won his opening match vs. Fort Hays State's Will Buchard via a 9-7 decision, before winning via fall against Concordia- Nebraska's Steven Barnes at 4:13. Hush would then claim a pair of decisions against Augustana's Aelx Mentzer (6-3) and Chadron State's Caleb Chaves (7-2) to advance to the finals. In the finals against Northern State's Krayle Stormer it was stormer who was able to come away with 2-0 decision.

Also at 141 lbs., senior Elijah Reece finished fifth as he turned in a 4-2 record. Reece won earned a pair of decision wins in the first two rounds, before he defeated Concordia Nebraska's Cal Price via fall at 4:30. Reece would then drop his next two matches via decisions against NSU's Krayle Stormer (8-2) and NSU's Karstyn Lhotak (4-1). In the fifth place match, he earned the win over Augustana's Luke Koenen via a no contest.

Also at 141 lbs., freshman Kaiden Dietzenbach began his day with a 17-2 tech fall over Nebraska-Kearney's Tyler Isbell at 1:32. In the second round, he suffered an 8-0 major decision loss to UNK's Connor Ritonya. He would bounce back with a 1-0 decision over a Chadon State's Cyrus Well and a fall over FHSU's Will Burchard at 4:29. Dietzenbach's final match came against NSU's Karstyn Lhotak who claimed the 13-6 decision over Dietzenbach as he finished his day with a 3-2 record.

At 165 lbs., sophomore Kaleb Lochner went 3-2 on the day. Lochner won his first match via fall against FHSU's Jace Schartz at 2:42, before besting AU's Colten Gundersen via a 14-2 major decision. Augustana's Cash Raymond handed Lochner a 16-9 loss, before Lochner bounced back with a 9-5 decision over Fort Hays State's Hunter Harris. In his final match of the day, Lochner lost an 8-1 decision to Chadron State's Tayten Gillette.

At 184 lbs. junior Jaquan East finished in fourth place at he put together a 5-2 record on the day. East won his first two matches via tech falls, before dropping a 6-4 decision to NSU's Travis Smith in the third round. East would go on to win his next three matches, including a 19-3 tech fall over Southwest Minnesota State's Mason Buss at the 6:57 mark to advance to the third place match. In the third-place match, East lost to Augustana's Owen Wasley via a 2-0 decision.

At 285 lbs., sophomore Callen Smithpeter went 1-2 on the day. He lost his opening match vs. Traun Cook who bested Smithpeter by a 3-0 decision, before bouncing back with a 4-1 decision victory over MSU Moorhead's Isaiah Wright. Smithpeter finished with day against NSU's Nathan Schauer who won via a 4-3 decision.

Minnesota State returns to action on November 15 as it takes part in the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa.
