Mavericks Come Up Short Against St. Cloud State, 1-0

MANKATO, Minn. — No. 2 Minnesota State was edged out by St. Cloud State 1-0 on Thursday at The Pitch. The decisive goal came in the second half, as St. Cloud converted one of their 14 total shots. The Mavericks managed nine shots, with four on target, but were unable to breach the St. Cloud's defense. Lauren McAlpine recorded four saves across both halves, but the St. Cloud's second-half effort secured the win.

The first half began with McAlpine starting at goalie. St. Cloud applied early pressure with several shots, but McAlpine made key saves, including stopping a shot from Ellie Primerano in the 7th minute. The Mavericks' Maille Mathis tested the opposing goalie, Jaylee Strickland, with a shot in the 21st minute, but it was saved.

As the half progressed, the Mavericks continued to defend effectively, with McAlpine making crucial saves against multiple attempts, notably from Gabby Hofeld and Brooke Quam. Despite opportunities from both teams, the half concluded with the score tied at 0-0.

The second half began with the Mavericks applying early pressure, as Mathis and Maddix Archer each attempted shots in the opening minutes. Despite their efforts, St. Cloud's goalkeeper, Strickland, made crucial saves to keep the home team off the scoreboard.

Midway through the half, Minnesota State faced a setback when Darby Allen found the back of the net for the visitors in the 67th minute, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks responded with increased offensive efforts, including shots by Reese Hilsenbeck and Amara Smith, but Strickland's consistent goalkeeping maintained the visitor's advantage.

As the half drew to a close, the Mavericks continued to press for an equalizer, earning multiple corner kicks and creating opportunities, but they were unable to convert. The half ended with St. Cloud holding onto a narrow 1-0 lead.

McAlpine played a crucial role in goal, recording four saves against 14 shots faced, allowing just one goal in 90 minutes. Mathis pressured the opposing defense with two shots, both on target. Smith contributed offensively with a shot on goal out of her single attempt. Hilsenbeck also added to the attack with one shot, which was on target.

The Mavericks will begin postseason play in the first round of the NSIC Tournament. The matchup is slated for Monday, Nov. 10 at The Pitch at 1 p.m.
