Mavericks Fight to the End but Fall in PK Shootout

MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State and Washburn University played to a 1-1 draw but the Mavericks fell to the Ichabods in penalty kicks. The Mavericks equalized in the second half, with the visiting team having taken the lead in the first half. The game saw the Mavericks outshoot the Washburn Ichabods 19-20, with Minnesota State's goalkeeper making five saves over 110 minutes. Both teams remained scoreless through the second half and two overtime periods, maintaining the draw. The intense match ultimately went into double overtime and resulted in penalty kicks.

The game commenced with Minnesota State establishing an early offensive rhythm, as Savanna Stockness and Avery Korsching both attempted shots within the first 13 minutes. However, the Ichabods took the lead in the 11th minute when Leah Henke scored with an assist from Grace Peterson.

The Mavericks responded with a series of attempts, including two shots by Addison Clarey, both saved by Washburn's goalkeeper, Lili Everley. McAlpine kept the home team in contention with a crucial save in the 22nd minute. Despite multiple efforts to equalize, Minnesota State ended the first half trailing 1-0.

Minnesota State began the second half with impactful play, as Maille Mathis scored in the 59th minute, assisted by Kiera Laney, leveling the score at 1-1. The team maintained pressure, with McAlpine making key saves to keep Washburn from taking the lead. Minnesota State generated several opportunities, including a shot from Mathis that was saved, while continuing to fend off Washburn's attempts. The half concluded with the score tied at 1-1, as both teams held strong defensively.

The overtime period commenced with the Mavericks applying immediate pressure on Washburn. Mathis took an early shot that went wide right at the 92nd minute, signaling Minnesota State's attacking intent. The home team continued to dominate possession, earning successive corner kicks in quick succession.

The Mavericks maintained their offensive momentum with Mathis firing another shot in the 95th minute, which was saved by Everley. Kovacs also tested Everley with a shot on target in the 98th minute, but the visitor's defense held firm. Despite Minnesota State's strong offensive efforts, the period ended scoreless.

The second overtime period commenced with the Mavericks creating opportunities early on. Laney initiated the attack with a shot shortly after the period began. Mathis followed with two attempts on goal, both saved by Everley. Despite the offensive pressure from the Mavericks, the period concluded without a breakthrough, maintaining a scoreless stalemate. The match ended in a draw with both teams unable to score in this period before going to penalty kicks. Washburn wins 4-2 in penalty kicks. 

McAlpine recorded five saves, holding the opposition to just one goal over 110 minutes. Mathis tallied one goal, capitalizing on six of her eight shots being on target. Laney contributed with an assist, adding to the team's offensive efforts.

This marks the end of the Mavericks 2025 soccer season.
