MANKATO, Minn — Minnesota State closed out the weekend with a 2–0 victory over Winona State on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch, capping another strong defensive performance.
The Mavericks controlled the pace early and were rewarded in the 22nd minute when Kiera Laney found the back of the net to give MSU a 1–0 lead. Just four minutes later, the Mavericks doubled their advantage when Mila Rustin buried a shot off an assist from Ruthie Gyasi, putting MSU up 2–0 before halftime.
Defensively, the Mavericks remained composed throughout the match. Senior goalkeeper Lauren McAlpine anchored the back line with a perfect outing, recording multiple key saves to earn the clean sheet.
Winona State tested McAlpine several times early in each half, but the Maverick defense, led by Addison Clarey and Anna Van Wyngarden, kept the Warriors off the scoreboard.
Minnesota State continued to apply offensive pressure in the second half, generating several quality looks from Avery Korsching and Maddix Archer, but Winona's goalkeeper Abigail Rounds made several stops to keep the scoreline from widening.\
Minnesota State improves its overall record to (11-0-2, 9-0-1 NSIC) and continues their season next weekend on the road as they face Minnesota Crookston and MSU Moorehead.
