BISMARCK, N.D. – The Mavericks traveled to UMary to continue their NSIC dual season, finishing with a nail-biter 21-19 win against the Marauders.
 
The dual started at 184-lb., with UMary getting the first few wins, including a 5-0 decision win by No. 4 Luke Tweeton at 285-lb. against MSU's freshman Callen Smithpeter.
 
At 125-lb., freshman Jacob Fitzpatrick was the first Maverick to put points on the board with a 13-5 major decision win over UMary's Gutenberger. Fitzpatrick had a quick takedown and 4pt nearfall in the first, and finishing with a 3pt takedown in the third to put the team scores 11-4 UMary.
 
No. 3 Reece Barnhardt won by tech fall at 133-lb. for the Marauders to increase their lead to 16-4 UMary.
 
Freshman Colton Hush, at 141-lb., faced UMary's Mortensen. After a takedown and 4pt nearfall in the first, Hush found a pin at 3:58 in the second period to bring the team score to 16-10 UMary.
 
At 149-lb., redshirt-junior No. 13 Walker Bents won by a 9-0 major decision after takedowns in the first and third periods, closing the team score gap to 16-14 UMary.
 
After a decision loss at 157-lb. for MSU, junior No. 14 Kole Marko won by a 14-5 major decision with four takedowns throughout the match, almost tying the team score to 19-18 UMary.
 
In the final match of the night, redshirt-junior No. 13 Drake Hayward led early with a takedown in the first period. Neither wrestler scored in the second, followed by an escape by Hayward after choosing the down position. Mushinsky (UMary) found a takedown, which Hayward was able to quickly escape, and along with 1pt of riding time, Hayward won by a 6-3 decision, capping off the dual win for the Mavericks 21-19.
 
The Mavericks stay in N.D. and face Minot State tomorrow, Jan. 6^th at 7 p.m. to continue their NSIC dual season.
