Minnesota State Set to Battle #2 Parkside

Mavericks Host Rangers, Travel to Mustangs

What Lies Ahead: The Mavericks host the Rangers tonight, Jan. 30th, to continue their conference dual season against UW-Parkside, tied in second in the national polls. Minnesota State turns around tomorrow, Jan. 31st to travel to Marshall, Minn. to face Southwest Minnesota State.
 

About Minnesota State: MSU holds a 6-2 overall record, 3-1 NSIC record. The Mavericks have three ranked wrestlers from the National Wrestling Coaches' Association: No. 14 R-Fr. Walker Bents at 149-lb., No. 15 junior Kole Marko at 165-lb., and No. 6 R-Jr. Drake Hayward at 174-lb.

About UW-Parkside: The No. 2 Rangers currently hold a 10-2 overall record, with a 4-1 conference record. UW-Parkside has eight ranked wrestlers, including No. 1 Cayden Henschel at 141 pounds. Head coach, SNick Becker, is in his fourth season with the Rangers and has a overall record of 34-7.

About SMSU: The Mustangs currently hold a 3-8 overall record, with a perfect 0-5 conference record. Head coach, Chayse Jackson, is in his fourth season with the Mustangs.

Last Time Out: Minnesota State hosted No. 1 St. Cloud State on Jan. 16th, ending with a loss of 3-35 to the Huskies.

The Makovsky File: In his 31st year with Minnesota State, head coach Jim Makovsky holds an impressive 306-137-3 career record, the most in program history. Makovsky has coached 12 Individual National Champions, 96 NCAA All-Americans, and has been inducted into the NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.
 

National Appearances: Minnesota State made an appearance on the podium in the 2022-23 season with senior Darrell Mason, at 285 lb., finishing third. Mason held a 17-4 record, became a two-time NCAA All-American, and earned the Minnesota State Senior Male Athlete of the Year Honor. Mason was also the national champion at 285 lb. his junior year with a perfect 22-0 record.
